sputtering

Asked by soldierbp Jul 16, 2018 at 02:03 PM about the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Premier AWD

Question type: General

My mountaineer really sputters on startup. Vehicle needs to get warm and then "usually" is fine, but only after like 5 minutes. Has high miles (211,000) but otherwise runs ok and a/c works great.

Could be anything from spark plugs and coils to sensors to fuel delivery. Many possible causes. If you are not wanting to troubleshoot and diagnose, give it to a reliable shop to do it for you. If you want to do it yourself, start by seeing if any error codes have been recorded and then start there.
