Air conditioner does not work, will only blow hot air

My 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS has problems with the air conditioner.  I've had the freon level checked, and it was empty.  However, once the freon was pumped back in, hot air still came out of the vents.  I have had problems with the air conditioner before; a leak was discovered and a hose had to be replaced, I believe.  Could this be an issue with a leak again or some sort of other problem, such as an issue with the air conditioner compressor?  I would appreciate any advice as to what to look at next.

have the system vacumed down and see if it holds vac,if not you have a leak in the system,if it holds vac replace the orfis tube,dryer and recharge,of course this will have to be done by a mechanic,make sure he is certifed in auto ac.

is this a pretty common issue? I have no idea about cars, but i see the majority of people have a blinking light when there is an issue indicated. I don't get that blinking light, i am worried this is going to be really expensive and i hesitate to bring it to a mechanic to be charged and not have the actual work done right away?
