Will only start in neutral and engage in reverse

My son's Mitsubishi Eclipse will only start in
neutral and engaged to reverse and it is real
stiff trying to move the shifter and is a
console shifter did not do this before winter
at set and now we have this problem what
could that be any help would be awesome
I'm a Chevy guy so that eclipse is out of my
league

lube up the shifter on top of the tranmission, little plastic part, white in color, might be dirty. drivers side of engine bay. might had to take off air box to see it. twist it by hand until the thing comes loose. happened to my 2000 GT automatic.
