2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 87000 miles
2001 Mit. Eclipse GT auto. tran. w/ sport shift. Without any previous symptoms, the trans. stop putting power to the wheels. While driving in "D", the rpm's went up and I was coasting. No gears work (D or R). It sounds and feels as if it is trying to go into gear, but only rev.s up, no power to the wheels. It will shift into "N" because I can push it. Any ideas since no earlier symptoms? Clogged trans. filter? Some hose disconnect? Or complete Transaxle shot? Thanks! -> non-mechanic here.

pull a cooler hose and put in gear should shoot tranny fluid if no fluid pump prob went out.

What was the solution? I have the same problem. ned.batchelor@gmail.com
ok, Check your fluids for smell, feel for texture, and color. If it's smells burnt, looks brown or black (which you should hope it doesn't look black), or feels gritty; your gonna need a trans rebuild.

Ok waayyy dramatic with the trans rebuild. Disconnect your battery to reset codes. If engine light comes back on, which it should, get scan from oreillys. That should tell you which sensor to replace. Fyi ebay and amazon are best routes for buying parts for reasonable price.

been to an oil change service like Jippy lube? They put the wrong trans fluid to "top off" my wife's car. In a week or so it slowly stopped shifting into gear. I has to rev it to get it to change gear. the next day it was undriveable. took it to Accmco. told them my suspicions about wrong fluid." not possible" they said. The next day they said it would cost 3600.00 for a rebuilt transmission. I put the car in storage for 2 years saving up for it. By chance I talked to a mechanic who suggested we take it to his uncle. The day after we dropped it off he called us to say we could come and pick it up. I asked how much it was to fix it. He said all he did was change the fluid. It was obvious when he drained it had two different fluids so it was like 65 bucks for a "flush and fill"!! The a__holes at Accmco never even drained the transmission!!
On my 2001, there was a shift switch up in the front that would get wet and cause the transmission to throw an error code and go into neutral. I cleaned it up, sealed it good and it started working after resetting the computer.
