My son has a 1998 gs Mitsubishi Eclipse. I'm looking to put a turbo replacement engine in it since his non turbo engine now has thrown a rod.

Question type: Car Customization

It has a non turbo engine now, and I would like to know what it would take to
replace it with a turbo engine, and it has an automatic tranny. Will the turbo
make that much difference performance wise to even want to go turbo?

lets put it this way those big tractor trailers moving around and the like get roughly 85 to 90 percent of their power from the turbos they have installed. so yes it makes a huge difference. it will be pricey, you need an intercooler, of course the turbo, also the engine will have to have to the internals forged otherwise the engine will blow up the first time your kid goes to boost. a blow off valve, and i think thats it don't quote me entirely but those are definately the basics. however i think it would be a waste of time for an automatic.

how old is your son? Putting him in a turbo car needs to be taken serious. These little cars can build lots of power using turbos. Folks that have never driven these little 4 or 6 cylinder turbo cars are in for a surprise when they happen to pull up beside one at a red light and think that their v8 camaro even has a chance. But father son projects are a positive thing. Me and my son build 91 3000 Gts together. Mine is an all wheel drive twin turbo v6 (VR4)and his is just DOHC v6. His is still fast but that twin turbo is unreal.

Eclipse is relatively cheap to build as a turbo car. There are plenty of full turbo kits and acc out there made just for these cars.
