1998 non turbo Mitsubishi Eclipse.
I asked this question earlier, but I didn't
really clarify my question. My son, Who is
19 and a good driver, has a 1998
Mitsubishi Eclipse gs non turbo. He threw
a rod in it, I'm planning to remove the non
turbo engine and put in a turbo engine
(swap). Is that possible (cheaply) as far as
the swap without having to do a bunch of
alterations. I just want to pull the old
engine, and put in a turbo engine. It's just
sitting now, because I just didn't have the
funds to buy a new car for him. But he
hates how slow it is. I want to surprise him
with more power. And yes he's responsible
enough to handle the difference. Is this
possible? I can get those used stock
engines all day long.
It is a huge undertaking because beyond the new engine you will have to attach and integrate the intercooler for the turbo as well as the scrolls. Unless you are a very skilled mechanic it will be a tough job. Also the RS Eclipse for those model years do not have the proper radiator/coolant system to hand the turbo engine found in the Sypder models. Good luck!

he is right unless you have the mechanical know how it either become the sitting garage project, or being bent over by a shop to do it for you. i helped my buddy with his turbo eclipse and we got it done in about month. so it is possible with a lot of elbow grease and a lot of determination. also have your son work for it, nothing comes free.
He's a good kid, and works hard, that's why I'm helping him. He's trying to save to buy a nice car, but with school and all, he is struggling! So I'm trying to help! I like the car, it looks good lowered, and has aftermarket rims and tires. But he bought it used, and who ever had it before worked on it but rigged some things, and we've been fixing a few at a time. I have a mechanic putting in the engine, I'm just providing the engine. But if there are more things to change, it may not be worth it, that's why I'm asking.
A donor car is the way to go. It will have all the parts you will need to make this happen. I use donors cars on all my builds. Most times find a one with blown motor or trans but all other parts are still good. Most I buy are under $1000. Remove all the turbo supporting items (turbos, inner coolers, plumbing, radiators, Bov, ecu, wastegates ect ect) add your motor and you have a good reliable car.
Or find a turbo d eclipse that runs good but looks rough. Use your car as the donor by removing your lowering kit, rims, radio/sound system, fins, skirts, seats, interior, ect ect. Add these parts to the turbo car thro on some paint and he riding in style again with a car he made to his own liking.
Donor cars built these two. Got less than $2000 in each.
