can i install a vr4 engine to a coupe mitsubishi 3000gt

All models of the VR-4s used a 3.0 L V-6 engine, and A 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT will accept a 3.0 Liter V6 DOHC 24 valve FI engine
Yes it will bolt right up. But if you intend to keep the twin turbo on the vr- 4 engine you will need to change the electronics out also. You will also need to do some mods to get the inter cooler in the front grill. If not planning to keep it a turbo use exhaust and intake manifold off the other motor. Doing this your old electronics should work fine.
does the automatic transmission fit on the vr4 engine
Yes. It will bolt right up.
the bolt spacing is the same however if you plan on using the VR4 motor in a NA application the lower compression is going to rob you of power because it isnt going to get the air it was designed for. To accomidate for that you'ld either have to run the turbos and do a lot of wiring to utilize the VR4 computer or change the pistons which would make it easier to rebuild your NA block or get another. Also the automatics in the NA cars were not designed to handle the power from the turbo motor so be prepared to rebuild that before too long or swap in a manual.
James is correct about the lower compression of the vr4 motor. It is an 8:1 and the stock NA motor is 10:1. Sorry I over looked that in my earlier posts. There will definitely be a difference in the performance. Not to sure how noticeable it would be. But I would not put the vr4 in my sl without using the turbos. As he stated major mods to get it to perform correctly using the turbos in your sl but not impossible. And the increase in power would be fun to drive. Ps. James. Good looking spyder.
I have a 92 non turbo sl and thinking about droping a twin turbo vr4 engine in it. Everything should match up right? There both 3.0 24 valve doc engines. I'm aware I'd have to change computers out also I just want to make sure it will bolt up because I just got a brand new transmission for it. Thank you for your time
Yes it will bolt up to everything. But you will have to do some mods for the inner cooler. But should not be all that hard to do.
Alright thank you again dandy if you can help do you have a idea of which computers I'd have to change to swap to the twin turbo engine and which ones I should be able to leave alone bease these 3000gt have like 4 main computers 2 of them work the abs and drive control I think tho

Sorry I know It may not be worth the work but will a 91-92 vr4 engine be compatible for my 95 3000gt base ?

I have a94 mitsubishi 3000gt sl hatchback 2dr, v6, 3.0, 24 valves, 5 speed, rebuilt motor 90xxxmiles , stage 2 clutch, J&e racing pistons, aftermarket cams, biger intake from the vr4 cold air intake, full exhaust system, what Specifically parts I need to hook up a twin turbo into my car or if I can do that
Besides the ecu do I need to change any other electronic parts to make the vr4 work in the sl some one has done all the hard work but it won't start now
What year engine? And what year car? Does it have the two in one cam/crank position sensor on the passenger side of back head or does it have the separate sensors under the timing belt cover?
It's a 92 sl it's got the single crankshaft on the passenger side which I just changet trying to fix the no starting issue but didn't help at all.
I found a tt vr4 engine with the ecu and awd drive transmission rebuilt for 3000 that I was going to put in and run my 5 speed fwd transmission till it goes out. I just ain't got the money to fix it now so trying to get plans together
Can i use a 91 vr4 doner car and make a 99 base into a vr4 i have two shells and a doner car just need to know befor i buy the doner to make a vr4 99 cause there to rare to bye
I have a 1997 mitsubishi 3000gt base with a 3.0 sohc and I am wabring to swap it with a vr4 engine and trans

I have a 95 base model. I'm wondering if the 92 vr4 motor and transmission and drive shaft will fit because the vr4 is all wheel drive but mines front wheel drive. There both manuals
I have a 1994 sl n i swap a 1993 jdm vr4 twin turbo everything is ready but i need a adapter for my harness any idea i can find one
I have a 95 sl and I was wondering of i can keep my block and put turbo's to tht. Will my internals hold up?
What all would I have to do to turbo my 1994 3.0 DOHC automatic
I know make room for intercooler tap into sump and get turbo exhaust manifold but do I have to do any internal work??

I have a base model 1997. Can i twin turbo that? and if i can what all is needed to make it work?
My understanding from actual GT forum, is don't do it. If its not a VR4 its not worth the money or time to convert it. The motor is same 3.0L but the mods required to fit the inter coolers aren't cheap. Also the transmission on the VR4 is 6 speed and all the rest are only 5 speed, so to get most out of motor your have to do tranny and mods, however, that tranny is also for AWD so you'd either have to mod the tranny or replace the whole drivetrain. Then theres the computer issue and writing on top of that. Its cheaper to start with a VR4 that needs work and take the parts from your existing car to fix it up

I know this is an old post, but for the sake of offering up a little info I figure I’ll toss my 2 cents in for people who come across it with the same questions. So far I’ve seen questions on flipping base and SL cars to turbo, so here goes. The SL and VR-4 both share very similar 24 valve 6G72 engines with the same forged crank on 93+ model cars and the same strong rods which is more desirable for this type of conversion. The pistons are very different as you would expect due to compression ratios being higher on non turbo cars. The N/A SL engine can handle the boost. Some have made north of 450whp with a good tune, others have made more with flawless tunes on the ragged edge. The pistons are the weakest link here. The power response on the N/A cars converted to turbo is actually flatter than the VR-4 variant because the added compression makes turbo response faster by far. The tuning must be done well though. A simple cheat to this would be to bolt on all the VR-4 parts to the SL engine, using the VR-4 computer, and if you have a 93 and earlier engine, simply retarding the cas 3 to 5 degrees and limiting boost to about 10psi. You would also need VR-4 spark plugs, Intercooler and all pipes, bigger injectors, and a fuel pump, and you could be ok on that set up if you don’t go turning up the boost beyond 10-12psi max or run less than 93 octane. The base model single cam engines were the weaker variants. You can boost them, but they Should be built for any substantial gains so I would pass, although some have made big numbers on these engines as well. The auto and manual FWD trans will bolt up. They may not hold up however. That would largely depend on the driver and their thirst for boost pressure. The ECU from a VR-4 will plug up and start an SL and vice versa. The SL computer however will not run the boost gauge that Mitsubishi has from the factory. The dash board wiring harness is the same between both the SL and VR-4 models. Not sure on the base model although I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same as well. A VR-4 or imported GTO engine, wiring harness and ECU, an FWD Flywheel, Clutch, Pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot shaft bearing and transmission As well as the half shafts from an SL as well as the transmission mount would be a requirement. The factory SL fuel pump should be replaced with at least a Walbro 255lph in tank fuel pump (good for about 500whp) and just for giggles I’d install the factory VR-4 triple gauge pack and sense the dash must be removed to install it, I’d get a good dash pad from another car and install it along with the dash vents at the same time as most are cracked from heat and old age. If the harnesses are from close to the same year most of this will be plug and play save for a few small details. Front Brakes and a brake master cylinder from a VR-4 at this point wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Now, I won’t tell you not to convert your SL or base to a VR-4. Honesty a salvage yard would probably sell you everything you need for the conversion for less than a couple grand. A full VR-4 engine swap with the wiring harness ECU and trans is the easiest way to go and then just using your 5spd SL trans and it’s related parts gets you 80% there. With VR-4 prices steadily increasing, just buying a VR-4 to get where you wanna be may be a little out of reach, compared to spending a few grand and some wrench time to get the performance you want from your old friend. Doing it this way isn’t exactly easy either. There’s a lot involved if you aren’t an experienced technician or have limited knowledge. However if you have an SL, a limited budget, and some tools and know how, you can take this route and end up with a pretty gun car. A 3000GT SL- Turbo can be a pretty entertaining car if anything for the sleeper factor than anything else.... cheers!
My 92 3000gt engine rev up and down when idled. Anyone know what the issue is and how to fix the problem?
My 92 3000gt engine rev up and down when idled. Anyone know what the issue is and how to fix the problem? Sounds like a vacum leak. exchange the vacum hooses, wich tend to dry out and crack on older cars. There is a wiring diagram under the hood, follow each hose and exchange. Good luck!
