97 Ford Exped. brake lights won't work and can't get out of park...what's the problem?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
We changed bulbs, fuses, and brake switch, but the lights still don't work. Also we have to leave gear in neutral because it gets stuck in park and won't come out. There is a flat metal wire in the steering column that when we take it out and pt it back in the gears are able to shift, but still gets stuck in park. What do we need to do now? running out of options

Take it somewhere and get it fixed correctly.
That sure was an original thought...I know to get it fixed properly that wasn't my damn question...was just looking for some insight to know what was wrong...but THANKS SOOOO MUCH kbro for your well thought out answer. This will be my last question for CARGURUS.com!!!!!
You asked "what do we need to do now"? I answered that question. What you have done to it has not fixed it. Time to take it to the professionals.

I am guessing you have some broken wires somewhere Donna. It will take some time to trace back and tone out to the problem. In this instance taking it to a professional is most likely going to be the best response. Sometimes car people don't always have a very cavalier attitude. Sorry for your experience... Hi Donna, My 97 Expedition has the exact 2 problems. My brake lights stopped working and it was getting stick in park. I haven't figured out the brake light issue, but as far as getting stuck in park there is a solenoid on the steering column that is suppose to retract when you push the brake. I replaced it and that fixed the getting stuck problem. Hope that helps at least part of your problem.
I have the exact problem. I had to pull the gear shift lever in before I started my car. Discovered by accident that if the emergency flashers are on I can shift out of park. Will change the solenoid, thanks.
