Why is my Spider Surging under load?

Asked by teeceejr Mar 11, 2020 at 06:21 PM about the 1982 FIAT 124 Spider 2000 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 82 Spider 2000 that is
new to me and its giving me a bit
of hell.
First off, I'm having a hard time
with the cooling system. I have
replaced bad hoses, flushed it out
two or three times the final with a
$25 bottle of Preston's cleaner.
From everything I can find it
seems to have air in the system
not allowing full circulation.
How do you ever get it out or even
know that you have?
Next... this car has run sweet for
the two months I've had it but it
has started surging under load,
especially in 2nd gear. What could
this be?

I have not checked or changed the fuel filter. I will do that. Yes there is what appears to be a bleeder on that fitting. Exactly how would you use it? Never heard of water wetter. Also cooling system related, my fan is not coming on till my gauge reads like 150, it does come on but much later than I think it should. Could that be a bad/dirty sensor? I thought that is what it was, wasnt sure about opening it or how and when to open it.
