Electrical nightmare

12 volts is low on battery voltage, charged should be at 12.5 V. Like I said when charging voltage should read 14.5 V at the battery. Unless you have some sort of wiring problem, bad connections, burnt wiring, there is usually a problem with the alternator. But since you have replaced it on lots of vehicles there is a fuse that could be blown not allowing the alternator to work. Start by looking for a burnt out fuse. Could have ben caused by the old alternator.
Thank you for the great info.I just tightened the belt more on the alternator and the light doesn't come on anymore feel a little foolish still not getting 14.5 at battery only 13
How did you tighten the belt? It looks to be a serpentine belt that would have a belt tensioner on it. Sounds like the belt was slipping and the only way to stop that is to get a new belt and maybe the belt tensioner.
On the alternator theres actually a slide bracket with a tensioner screw on it. The alt belt also runs the power steering pump. It took a little time to figure out why the alt light was affected by turning the wheel. The car was sitting for a couple of years and i was worried rodents might have damaged something. Because the belt wasnt tight enough it wasnt charging properly. And affecting p.s and alt light. Charging 14.5 now. Thanx for helping
