Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Got a '91 chevy silverado 2500 4x4 5.7L.  Got it from an old farmer. Just replaced the
starter. Ran fine. Yesterday it started backfiring and it started smoking. I let it sit until it
was done then put more oil in it. ran fine at first but it wouldn't go past 40 and still
backfiring...cuts off here and there. not sure what the problem is. trying to fix it for a
friend.

Here is a video that will give you some areas to check out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDbRw-xEtyI I would start by replacing the cheapest part first which would be the Engine Coolant Temp sensor. Only $16. You may want to just give the vehicle an overall tune up as well. I know how well the old farm boys take care of the farm truck. I would buy some throttle body cleaner and go right to town on it. Clean or replace your IAC as well. I would replace all the usual suspects. Cap, rotor, air filter, gas filter, plugs, wires, pvc valve. If no change in performance, I would move to the MAP sensor.
