Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought this car this year in march 2015. Had various problems little behold the head gasket was blown and now I'm doing all
new everything imaginable, replacing the old parts and tuning up the engine. Slow process due to funds.
Main question, tach works sometimes and when it does it jumps from 5000 rpms to 0? Where is the tach censor located at? Is it in
behind the radio  or on the coil thing?
I read numerous blogs on this and all have same issues! But none tells me how to trouble shoot it.

The white wire coming off the ecu is the tach wire.

Kool thanks for your help! How's this question. My valves are bent is there a kit available to do the work myself? EBay offers rebuilt heads for 500$ with a core charges! Just seeing all options before any attempts are made.

Need to re state the above statement it is the white wire on the PTU that I was referring to. PTU is located under your coils. Has two harnesses plugged into it. The harness closest to the front of car and the second wire from the front in this harness is your tach wire.

Not sure about using eBay rebuilt heads myself. When my sons got bent I did most of the work myself. I did order the valves on line because they were eight to ten dollars cheaper a piece than at my local auto parts store. Bought my valve guide seals and all other seals/gaskets from local store(auto zone). Removed my heads and let a local guy that does head work rebuild the heads. He checked and reseated all the valves(even the ones that were not bent) installed the new ones and all the valve guide seals for $80.

Also get you a good quality timing belt and water pump. I also advise to change all the timing belt pullies now too. Might also think about putting some large bore lifters in now to help with the lifter tick issues these cars are known for. And for your own sake do not buy one of the full gaskets sets on line. They are priced for about $100 for everything plus your new head bolts but believe they are no good. I did buy one to start with but ended up having to replace all the gaskets I used out of this set within a couple months of getting motor back together. Went to auto zone and ordered new ones. They were high but well worth it.

Just a thought. If you live close to Mobile,AL. I know where a whole running car is for sale for $400. Car has front end damage that can't be fixed, seats have been removed but motor and trans work good. Almost bought it for a parts car but wife is over me having parts cars parked out behind my shed. Lol

I live in Naples Florida . so that's about 10 hrs away i really don't have a way to transport it back.wish I could! Go deals are always somewhere else! Lol And what is so different between cheap head gasket sets vs. More expensive one? They all look the same online and in person. Auto zone wanted 285$ for it eBay I got it for 90$

I'm am having a hard time finding to correct match up on the water pump! Carwiz has sent me two so far and both don't line up so well! I did notice its OEM and made fromGMB but their pumps are like anywhere from 50$ and up.! Lifter tick is common with these cars. I did research and some guys changed out old lifter and put new ones in , made no difference!

There's the link. Tell me what you think? Maybe I should send the heads to you and you have your guy fix them lol. Everything here in Naples is too expensive!!!

Well those do have a warranty. And looks as if they come with the cam shafts, rockers and lifters already installed. Those might be worth a try. The cheaper head gaskets and head bolts worked ok. But the cam seals, valve cover seals, main seals out of the cheaper set all started leaking real bad and I had to replace them. I bought my timing belt and water pump from advance auto parts. Water pump has a life time warranty so every time I change my timing belt I get a new water pump for free.

If you do use those heads either install your cam pullies before you mount your heads or use something to hold the pulley still so the cam shaft does not roll over if heads are already installed. If the cam shaft rolls over you will bend the new valves and have to start all over.

Yeah sounds like a pain inda ass! I never did any valve work before let alone on this jap car!! All new to me

I found a guy by accident(which never happens) when I was searching for parts. He has a web site and I have been purchasing parts from him. Do you need any thing for your 3000gt? I can send you his email if you like?

625

I just got an email from him about heads. Everything on it cam pully and throttle still on it for 240$ shipped! Good condition

201,065

All I am needing is some small trim pieces. I am hoping the guy here will sell these to me off of his.

importpartsman@hotmail.com Here is his email. Check him out see what he can do...maybe cheaper, never know

Ok thanks. Good luck with your car. We greatly enjoy ours. Built my son a 91 SL. Working on me a 91 VR4 now. His is the red one and mine the black. We love cruising together. Real head turners..lol

625

Nice!! That's exactly what I got! The maroon colored one lol wish it came with sun roof but Ol well. I'm having Stevie to check and see if a vr4 head would match up to a base model. Do you know if the specs would match? Or is it a waste of time?

201,065

Vr4 is a lower compression ratio (8.7-1)than the SL(10-1). Don't think you will be helping yourself to use vr4 heads. For your engine to keep its power and sporty feel you need to keep the ratio at 10-1. And use only high quality high octane fuel.

http://www.bobthegreat.com/pages/mycar/mods/heads.html -- check this out for the differences in the heads. Also note that the sl has a more aggressive exhaust cam but the intake cams are the same. Also check out 3si.org. They have real good info there for these cars.

Great! Thanks for your knowledge!! You have been a lot of help!!! If I have any more issues I'll let you know and updates on my project
