Just changed the head gaskets and timing chain on so why did my engine
light2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 stay on and now my muffler is spewing oil soot and
the meter reads catalyst emissions threshold P0420

Is the timing off? That is one of the possible causes for that code. Review the timing chain install.
