Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Nissan Pathfinder 4.0, 4X4 Computer failure. installed a 2006 Xterra
computer and it starts and drive but only in 4th gear. would this mean a
compatibility problem with the computer; or there could be a deeper fault?

Perhaps the ECU is not compatible with your transmission.

Is it possible to confirm this incompatibility between ECU and transmission: does anyone knows for certain that this can, or cannot work?

Using the wrong ECU guarantees problems. You could try reflashing the computer to your engine specs but you may have to hunt down the correct ECU.
