gas gauge indicator

Asked by GuruHFF6V Aug 08, 2019 at 10:39 AM about the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a Rav 4 hybrid 2019. And the fuel gauge doesn’t show full when I put
gas in the suv. I’ve taken it to the dealer and they told me that Toyota is
investigating this problem. I have paid a lot of money for this suv to be havthis
trouble, it is only 2 1/2 months old. There is no excuse for this to be going on.
If the problem cannot be fixed I feel that I should be given a new one. The
dealer also told me that this is the first time that someone has brought this to
there attention.

My 2019 rav hybrid, same problem, fuel tops off, gauge goes to 3/4. Toyota dealer replaced sending unit in tank, kept the vehicle for 3 days doing more testing. Got the vehicle back from the dealer, was advised they do not know what is wrong. Called Toyota corporate, got a case number, my wife has received 3 calls from Toyota corporate without any resolution. If anything it can be faults advertising, at 43 MPG only get 420 miles per tank.

The rav4world site has about 1340 posting regarding the 2019 Toyota Rav hybrid with our same problem. I thought it was just my Rav, after reading all the posts, I realized there’s a wide spread problem here. Best of luck!

Same here. I took it back to the dealership and they filled it up and somehow they got the gauge to read full. The next 2 times I got gas it only went to 3/4 of a tank again.

Toyota corporate informed there is an issue running cables between both halves of the gas tank. Only way to fix at this time is to drop the gas tank and reroute cable that is interfering with level sensor.

Exact same issue. Bought my RAV4 Hybrid August 8, 2019; 1st and 2nd fill-ups only went to 3/4 full. brought car to dealer in Weston, FL after seeing over 900 postings with same problem. They claimed (salesman, then head of service Steve) they know nothing about it but assumed if a problem Toyota will come up with a fix. Asked that I wait until 1st service at 5K to see if still a problem and if Toyota has found a fix yet. Problem continues as of 9/25/19. Have tried putting gas in slowly and worked better once and did not once even after 2 topping-offs. I figure I lose about 80-100 miles per tank of gas so need to fill-up more frequently. I have a case # but Customer Service said a few times on our call (as if reading from a script) "I can not acknowledge any problem with the fuel gauge:"!!!!! even though I told him websites have over 900 postings of the problem and many people have case #s provided by Toyota. Bull.....

Yes, I don’t understand why Toyota dealers will not acknowledge there’s an issue here. At least they can advise they’re aware of a fuel filling problem, however there’s no fix at this time. I can understand the dealers not wanting to start replacing a bunch of parts, hoping it will remedy the problem, Toyota corporate will not reimburse the dealership for warranty coverage. I really like this RAV4 Hybrid, the power and torque from the electric motors makes for a nice powerful combination, and 41.9 mpg in normal mode makes it even better. (This is my 7th Toyota hybrid). Unfortunately after going round and round with the corporate case manager since June without an answer of what to do next, I told them to buy the RAV4 Hybrid back. I don’t want to deal with it. This process (per case manager) takes 30 to 45 days to review, this is day 26, and I call Toyota corporate once a week to follow up with the case manager. I also spoke with the General manager of my dealership advising the above and the fact I bought about 14 Toyota’s, and referred 5 friends who bought from their dealership as well. Best of luck to all with this same problem

This last week received a call from Toyota Corporate, they offered a repurchase of my RAV4 Hybrid, full price, tax, license, less mileage charge. I accepted the offer, within a a week or two should get a call from the dealer to schedule the settlement transaction.

So after the buy back process is over, do you have to reapply for a loan and go through the entire purchase process over again? I am waiting on a call this week for the exact same thing. I am trying to decide if it is worth it or if I should just wait for them to come up with a fix for it. Also...what is the mileage charge? How much per mile are they going to deduct from the buy back?

1 people found this helpful.
610

I think it was 25 cents a mile, 3800 miles @ .25= $900+ deduction. I own the RAV4, so I will get the full amount. I love the RAV4 Hybrid, I do have access to another vehicle for the meantime, thinking of waiting, researching, once Toyota clears the fuel filling problem, I may purchase a new RAV4 Hybrid that no longer has our problem.

Wow: I also have a Toyota case # for the same problem (my posting is above Guru1r89F) and it is getting worse - losing about 100 miles per tank. Head of Service for Weston Toyota (Steve) says to wait for Toyota to come up with a solution as he does not know what the issue is, but I am increasingly frustrated. Can you share who in Toyota advised you of this and that the dealer will be in touch in about 2 weeks to settle so I can contact? THANKS FOR THIS UPDATE!

I’m receiving email from cargrus from posters, regarding my issue and how I’m dealing with Toyota Corporate. I’ve answered a few questions, however this is not posting. Please look up 2019 RAV4 Hybrid fuel tank filling problem, Rav4world.com has over 1k posts regarding our problem and it very helpful.

UPDATE: After Toyota Corp continued to say they could not acknowledge the problem and the dealership (Weston, FL Toyota ) said they have had no other problems and do not trust/accept the 1300+ website posts, the dealer agreed to bring car in to see if they could find a problem. Once in the shop, the Dealer then called Toyota corp. and spoke to people we can not get to talk to, and were told to do nothing, they are aware of the problem and are looking for a fix. And then gave my car back to me and ask that I wait. I now have 2300 miles on the car, have "filled up" 7-8 times and only once did it reach full, but typically only goes to 3/4 to 7/8. So I lose about 100 miles/tank. So I wait.... For now....

Hmmm...maybe a Class Action lawsuit will get Toyota moving a little faster with a solution? Bought our 2019 RAV4 Limited Hybrid in mid-July. Back for service end of July because of fuel gauge issue. Service tech said that "Toyota was aware of the problem and is working on a fix." How long are we supposed to wait?

380

If someone has the time to organize a class action lawsuit, I am in. And am guessing hundreds (or more) others would participate. Between this site and Rav4world.com there are certainly many people impacted by this problem, and would most certainly raise Toyota's need to get a fix.

We've had our 2019, Made in Japan, Rav4 XLE Hybrid about two weeks [Oct 18, 2019] and fuel gauge needle has gone slightly passed "F" on two fill ups. On both fill ups, gauge needle prior to Fill Up, was between quarter and half tank. Fill ups were 6.6 gal and 7.2 gal to fill tank. We use the "remaining miles as an indicator" rather than gauge needle [accuracy; shown total miles driven 540/39.5MPG = 13.6 gal used. Pretty close

You are one of the fortunate ones. I've had mine since Aug. 8; I only had one fill-up that reach/exceeded full and it showed 520 DTE; I've tried multiple gas stations (including the one that reached fill 3 times) but never get beyond 3/4 and reach 7/8 after 3-4 top offs (was told by dealer to never top off since it may damage sensors. so I no longer do). It is typically 420 DTE and getting 37 MPG. This is a similar experience of most other people who post on this and RAV4World site. The dealer says the problem is not a safety threat, But they agree it will impact resale value (I bought mine outright). Love the car but this is an annoyance; would like some compensation to offset the expected lower resale value.

My 2019 has the same problem but seems to be getting worse. I've never been able to put in more than 10 gallons of gasoline, even when I ran the DTE down to 40 miles. I now only getting about 380 mile DTE when I fuel the vehicle. Ugh!

I just bought a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE. The car alerted me to low fuel with an estimated 30 miles until empty. The capacity of the tank should be 14.5 gallons and I could only put in 11.4 gallons before it was full. I think the 2020 is having the same problem. I am going to contact the dealer.

Yep. Spoke again with both my dealer and Toyota Customer service and documenting every conversation and action. They still insist they will come up with a fix, but I see some are getting buybacks and they might also consider some compensation or discount from the purchase price, but still ask that I wait and see. How long does one wait???? That's why I am documenting every conversation, time date and name. They say it is not a safety hazard, but agree it is not what we bought and that it is frustrating/inconvenient.

We're comfortable knowing our 1 month old 2019 Rav4 Hybrid now has over 1500 miles, a 40 mpg average and has yet to experience the conditions on range, fuel guage and fill up problems being posted. We should be asking Toyota why the firm has increased the battery warranty of the 2020 Rav4 Hybrid due out in February 2020 to 120 months/150,000 miles but has excluded the same generation designed 2019 keeping it at 96 months/100,000?

Update: I called our dealer who reported that they have had 3 other people have the same issue with their Rav4's. He directed me to call Toyota directly. I reported my issue and received a case number. The lady who I spoke to stated she had taken a couple of other calls with my same issue for the 2019 model but none as of yet for the 2020. She said to keep reporting the issues to them as they "look for trends" in the calls that are coming in. She looked and found no upcoming fixes or recalls on this issue. I plan to call every 30 days for an update. Toyota's number is 800-331-4331.

On my 19 XSE, when I am at "E" the tank only fills up with 9-gallons. I made an appointment and took in to the dealer, and after looking at it for 30-minutes, acknowledged that this is a know issue, but no remedy, but yes I have a 14.5 gallon tank... I've called Toyota and they were no help other than to say the "were working on it". Last Toyota I will ever buy and If I hadn't already put $1600 in PPF on it already, it would be going back.

https://youtu.be/bQ02FYTCvOs My 2020 Rav4 Hybrid xle only allowing 9.98 Gallons. Call Toyota they are aware and can help with lemon purchases. Will try next week.

I'm having the same issue with my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE. I always have to pump an additional 0.5 gallon of gas so that reads truly full. When I first purchased the vehicle, the estimated miles until empty used to be in the high 500s and now it's in the high 400s. It's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, however, when you spend thousands of dollars on a vehicle, you expect this feature to be accurate.

180

Guru8SP2G, please call Toyota to open a case for you and go to the dealer to open a case as well.

90

I had 2 different cases with Toyota and they denied both claims. All they have done is jerk me around by closing one claim and making me open another. Now I have to go through an arbitration process with the NCDS. I think my hearing is at the end of the month. I need to gather as much evidence as I can for my case. I have video taped me getting gas and it shows that the gauge will not go to full. I am going to make a 2nd video to add to the evidence I have. If anyone has any other websites where these issues are being discussed, I would appreciate if anyone could email me url addresses or any other evidence I may present at my hearing. It is ridiculous that I spent almost $40,000 on a vehicle and Toyota is putting me through this. If anyone has any Forum addresses or website addresses where this is being discussed, I would appreciate if you could email me those addresses. My email is JustinS1981@gmail.com Or does anyone have instances of claims with Toyota that have been approved. I don't see how Toyota can approve 1 claim and deny another if both vehicles have the same problem. I thought I read on here where someone was approved through Toyota for a buyback. If this is the case, that would help also. Thank you!!!

Justin: Go to RAV4World to the thread below. There are now about 2,898 posts and it is 145 pages long, so will take time to read through it. There are people who said they have rec'd buybacks from Toyota and they describe the process, but the process is not easy, as described (it is in the 145 pages). I have the same issue, 2nd tier Customer Service is useless, and I am planning to write a letter to the Toyota US president, several SVPs, and possibly all board members I can find to see if I can get a responsible person to respond. My dealership and specifically the head of service must know who to call, but they won't and say they need to wait to hear when a fix is ready, but won't call. Total BS. https://www.rav4world.com/threads/have-you-had-trouble-filling-your-hybrid-gas-tank.300662/

180

https://youtu.be/mzAb1u132_0 is my video for 2020 Rav4 I think they may have different issue as it shows full but does not allow more than 10 gallons meaning the fuel level indicator is wrong.

90

Here is the link to my video when I got gas yesterday. There is a deadline for me to submit evidence to the NCDS, so I plan on creating another video when I get gas the next time so I will have 2 videos instead of 1. I wish I would have thought to record me getting gas every time, but I just thought of doing it a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully having 2 videos showing the problem will be enough. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11BGIN3Yu4qhueypDd TafiVzbXTo_UTOn/view?usp=drivesdk

I have the same issue with my 2019 hybrid xle. Dealer told me nothing wrong with it, even though I know they r flatly lying. Love the rav hybrid so I m trading it to a 2020 xse tomorrow but now I am having second thoughts since it seems to be an issue as well.

I guess you could ask them to not fill the tank and ask to take it for a test drive and fill the tank yourself at the store and see if there are any issues with it. There was a problem every time I filled mine, but the 2 or 3 times I took it to the dealer they somehow got the gas gauge to show full there at the dealership. But not 1 time was I able to get the gauge go to full when I filled it at the gas station myself. I would like to know what the dealership did to get it to go to the full line. Like I said...I have had my car almost a year and not 1 time could I get it to go to the full line.

Perhaps frustrating, but can anyone explain why it is necessary for owners to DEMAND a refund or call the Rav4 a lemon for such a minor NON SAFETY problem which Toyota is working to fix on a vehicle achieving 40 to 42 average MPG? UNLIKE most posts stating Toyota as non-responsive we have found this NOT TO BE TRUE. Our experience with full tank fill and range estimates with our 2019 Rav4 Hybrid XLE now having 3200 miles was first reported via email on the Toyota Headquarters Website. A Toyota Headquarters email reply with a case number was followed by a call within 2 days from a representative in the Hdqrs division assigned to solving a possible design problem. We were advised that if not yet done, we should take the Rav4 in for inspection and have documented that our vehicle has the condition. Keeping in mind, the dealer can not fix the issue as when employees review tech bulletins or recalls in the computer none will be found. However, the dealer can at this time only report, verify and record the issue by attaching to our vehicle VIN file as having been brought to their attention by the owner. Today, we gave our dealer service department the Toyota Assigned case number email telling them they can check the vehicle on our first inspection at 5000 miles but we wanted the dealer to be aware of the issue for the record.

Hi Ron: In response to your message above (I'll try to keep it short), you say that found that Toyota being non-responsive is not to be true. That is far different than my experience, obviously different from CarGurus experience on this site, and apparently different from the over 4,000 people on Rav4World related to this gas gauge problem (2,900 on the current site, and about 1,200 that someone wiped out after the thread was started in June/July when the problem first surfaced) - feel free to read that terrible experiences expressed on the RAV4World site. A "Don't call us but we will call you when we find a fix" response is useless especially since Toyota has know about this problem since June (going on 7-8 months), it is obviously a widespread problem, they (the CSRs and the Dealer) denied it for a few months even though it was widely publicized until it got to over 2,000 responders and they could not keep denying it, and I get this from both Toyota Corp. Customer Service (on my 3rd CS Rep and an escalated 2nd tier person to boot) and from the head of service at my dealer. All I asked is that I talk to someone (or they reach out to someone who knows the status) who can tell me what they are doing to find the problem, and they refuse to call Toyota to find out. My head of service agreed that he can call someone beyond the CSRs who have internal knowledge of the issue and status, but now says he will wait until they get back to him and not call, for an issue they have known about for 7-8 months. That is why I personally will reach out to the President of Toyota and some senior VPs to find out who I can talk to for a simple update/status. Yes it is not a safety issue, but an inconvenience issue in that a full tank should have about 520 DTE when full, and I only get 375 to 415 DTEs so need to gas up 20% to 25% faster. If I am not mistaken, gas tanks have been on vehicles for over 100 years. I don't think this is rocket science to have a functioning gas gauge and accurate reflection of how much gas is in the tank and how far you can go before hitting empty. That is what is expected (a promise) when you buy a car - one of the service people at the dealer said it could be considered a lemon, an also agreed (as did the CSR) that an improperly functioning gas gauge would impact the resale value (I own my car outright). Not asking much. And if it is only happening to 2019 (and now apparently 2020) Rav4 Hybrids, I would think they could find out if there is a common part that might cause this after 7-8 months. This is Toyota, not a fly-by-night automaker. This is taking too long (length and time) and apologies for the detailed response. More to say but I think you get the picture as to why there is a lot of frustration in getting no useful response other that to wait (and wait and wait), and why some people are getting angry, and according to the websites, some people are in fact getting buybacks, as documented. All I want is a fix, and if they can not find one then some compensation for the impact in the resale value of the car (which they all agree will be impacted if not fixed). Hope that helps... Sorry for any typos or grammar errors...

Ron A+ I agree completely. If you have never tried to escape a hurricane with gas stations having no gas signs showing you don't know how valuable a exactly measured gas tank means to you. I am also only averaging 32mpg in the city for our average vs the published 40+ rating. I have tried all eco modes. When I first called Toyota I spoke with "Jackie" and she is the one about my options for lemon law and buyback options. I am doubtful if mine goes through with Illinois laws. We like the rest of the car, but this has to be fixed soon.

Jpiggott I am having similar problems to you on the mpg. The first 3-4 months after I bought the car in July I was getting at least 42 mpg. Around the same time the weather turned cold it plummeted to around 32-34 mpg with the same driving patterns - mode does not make a difference. On the fuel gauge, my first issue was that the gauge was reading as empty way before the tank was actually empty. So while I could only get 10 gallons in, the gauge was reading full, which means the tank was not even close to empty. Now it is hit or miss as to whether the gauge reads full when I fill it and I don't trust that my car is actually on empty when it says it is. Can I only put in 10 gallons because it won't accept the last 4, or were there still 4 gallons in the tank? My intuition, based on gauge readings says it is a combination of both. Anyone who thinks this is a minor inconvenience and not a safety problem has never driven long distances at night on back roads, or been stuck in horrible traffic on the interstate. In both instances you need to know how much gas you have in your tank and I honestly have no idea at any given point. I do not trust it is empty when it says it is, that is a problem.

Corporate Toyota denied both claims I submitted with them. I filed a claim with the NCDS and just submitted my last bit of evidence on Friday. My hearing is scheduled to go to the Arbitrators within the next week or two. I have submitted 2 videos of me getting gas that shows my vehicles gas gauge will not go to the full line even though I am pumping the gas until it is full. I also submitted all service tickets where I had appointments about this issue with the dealership. I hope they rule in my favor. When you spend almost $40,000 on a NEW vehicle, you shouldn't have to worry about something being defective before it was even purchased...and I shouldn't have to wait almost a year now to have it repaired.

I have found a "bush fix" for the fuel indicator problem until Toyota can get this issue fixed. My 2020 Hybrid XSE we bought in November consistently only lets me put in 9 gallons when low fuel light goes on. I went to a gas station where they didn't have the nozzle splash guards on their pumps. Once the pump clicked off about 9 gallons, I pulled the nozzle slightly out so the pump wouldn't click off when it thought it was full, and I could see where fuel would bubble up and then slowly go into the tank. I did this until it was almost overflowing. I got a total of 12 gallons in the tank. Once I started the car, the range went up to 450 miles. IT is a pain as it took me about 10 more minutes after it nozzle clicked off to get the extra 4 gallons in. At least now I don't have to fill up every 3 days like I was as I commute 100 miles round trip a day. So I believe the gauges are reading right. It looks like the problem has to do with the tank itself. I have a case number with Toyota with mine and I am calling them for an update every 30 days. Hope that helps!!

The fact is that Toyota HQ is aware of the tank problem and are aware that Dealers can not fix. With most of the over 90,000 2019 Rav4 Hybrids [including ours] sold in the US affected and likely many of those sold world wide, Toyota's fix will not happen quickly. A major recall may be necessary. To this day, January 27, I still believe the issue minor compared to the overall performance value of the RAV4 with 40MPG and consistent range over 380 miles before getting fuel. Frustrated Yes, overly concerned No!

90

That's your opinion. When I spend almost $40,000 on a vehicle I expect there to be NO DEFECTS. If I wanted to worry about something possibly being wrong or defective with a vehicle I buy and needing repairs, I would buy a used car...not a new one!!

1 people found this helpful.
90

For perspective and like you, I also expect no defect which makes me wonder what these owners have to say after laying out well over 150K in USA$. April 14, 2019 Courtesy of motoring.co.uk, motoring.co.uk The recall is expected to begin April 14, 2019, when Ferrari dealerships will replace the fuel vapor separators to prevent fuel leaks. Owners may contact Ferrari at 201-816-2668 and use recall number 69. [could be more]

380

I am 100% with Justin. The FACT IS that my 2019 RAV4 Hybrid is defective and I don't know or trust how much gas is in the tank, or how far I can go until I reach empty is ridiculous. Gas tanks have been around for over 100 years so this should not be rocket science - there s/b only a limited number of things it could be. AND both my dealer and my escalated 2nd tier Toyota customer rep agree it will impact resale value so this is a MAJOR issue (I paid cash). So Find a Fix or give us compensation for a defective vehicle which has lost value.

McLaren over $500K base Sennas found this issue in 15 percent of them. Sorry McLaren Senna owners in the United States, there's a recall for your hypercar because damage to the wiring harness can cause the engine to stall. The problem affects 129 vehicles, which are all of the deliveries in the country prior to August 8, 2019. 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan may be an expensive car, over-300-grand expensive to be exact, but it's no exemption to recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of the Rolls-Royce SUV due to a problem with its lighting. approximately 403 units of the 2019 Cullinan may not conform to the Section 7.3.13.1 and Table IX of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards....A couple more signs of the times

50

I went through this when I bought my Rav 4 in April. The dealership treated me like I was being overy picky and this was something they never heard of. Finally after an hour there the service manager said " I'm just going to tell you truth." The tank does hold the amount it is listed as, but the way the tank is put into the vehicle, the spigot can never fill it. Part of the tank is above the spigott so will always be filled with air. He drew me a picture of a tank with the spiggott down a ways from the top. They are telling truth about the tank size, but you can never use the full tank so it is all a consumer lie. I said, "so you lied to me." His response was "Yes. Toyota did." He says it is the same situation on all there vehicles on this platform. It is a big fat lie.

There is a class action suit on the 2019 & 2020 RAV4-A Google search brought up a YouTube video from FOX 4 Dallas explaining what’s been happening & stating that more than 92,000 of these vehicles have been sold; that the CEO & VP of Communications (corporate) have nothing to say; that a California law firm has filed a class action suit. The video is dated Feb 6, 2020. I have a 2016 RAV4 Limited Hybrid that I’ve had for 8 months & suddenly, today, gas started leaking out profusely..they tell me this is very rare, but makes me wonder why they changed the tank design for the 2019 model year in the first place Anyway, best of luck to you (us) all.

I purchased a Rava4Hybrid 02/2020. I have the same problem as mentioned by other persons. I've just started my communications with Toyota, case number and am now thinking of getting some legal help in this. I want them to buy back my car/give me purchase price toward something different. Very disappointed in Toyota...I've driven Toyotas for 25+ years. I believe they should have stopped producing the Hybrid if there are reported problems since 2019. In my discussion today I was told it's only the Rav Hybrids.

I have the same issue I just keep topping off the tank I am smart enough to know about how much gas it will talk to fill the tank I am getting on average 500 miles per tank. I will get the problem fixed when they come up with a solution which I am sure they will.

180

Tom, how many times after it clicks off at 10 gallons do you keep going? It seems I can only get 1-3 seconds more fuel after it shiuta off the first time. I'm guessing 6-10 times you would need to keep topping it off to get to 500+?? I am wondering if they will do anything since they increased the warranty. But I am trying to help with the class action lawsuit so will find out eventually.

10

I have a similar issue with my 2020 RAV4 hybrid. The tank reads full but the gas light comes on when there’s still 3 gallons left so I have to reset the trip gauge and fill up before it reaches 110-120 miles. Again, I heard that Toyota is “working” on it.

180

@Guru9971GV after you go the extra 110 miles does it let you out in more than 10 gallons of gas up to 14 and does the trip estimator show over 500 miles?

We bought a 2020 Rav 4 Hybrid XSE in February 2020 and have been hounding our local service department about this issue since ownership. Received a "Warranty Enhancement Program" notice from Toyota Canada (W46) today. Here is the TL;DR from the notice straight from Toyota: "Toyota has received customer reports of certain '19-'20 model year Rav4 Hybrid vehicle fuel gauges displaying less than full and/or total fuel dispensed is less than expected, when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off when refuelling. Customers have also noted the Distance to Empty shown on the MF display is less than expected. Based on our investigation, Toyota believes these conditions to be primarily related to a variation of fuel tank shape and the potential for the fuel sender gauge to become inclined." They then show a table with pictures of fuel gauges displaying less than full after filling till the nozzle clicks off. Since our vehicle has always experienced this issue, the only work-around we found so that we can enjoy the "advertised mileage" was to slowly continue fuelling after the fuel nozzle clicked off. Sometimes we could fill another 2-4 gallons this way. By recommendation from the W46 notice we received, we called our local Toyota service department and (having little knowledge about the complaint) they explained that they can see Toyota is recommending to replace the entire fuel tank / gauge / etc. This has me worried. They are going to inspect the prep for “Fix” further so will report back if we find anything.

Our Rav4 hybrid Xle was repaired yesterday. When we dropped it off it was almost empty with 20 miles it said low fuel. They did not put any fuel in it and the service guy said it must have fixed it as it says 1/4 of a tank now. I was able to fill the rest of the tank up with exactly 10.0 gallons. The fuel meter was way past the F now. The 2020 always went to full different than it sounds like the 2019 acted. I reset the trip data and it estimated 499 miles. I'd like to see that humber above 530 as it was 544 driving it home for the first time. Will update everyone with how this goes.

Hi Jpigott: Not sure what they did to fix it? I assume they must have done something to get the fuel gauge from about empty to 1/4 full when they gave it back to you. Yes? And then you had no problem getting to F+. How come/what changed? Then they appear to have ordered parts - what are these parts for? Thanks. My work-around now is to manually fill it VERY slowly and can now get to full almost all of the time and gets to 520+ DTE (vs. about 425 before). Takes about 5 extra minutes to fill up, but worth it. Glad it works at least for now. Thanks.

@Guru1R89F the tank or gage must have been in a position to not register the right amount of fuel in the tank. I am not a mechanic and didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I am just going by what they replaced with the tank sub assembly and gage assembly that something was wrong. Go to your dealer and ask as each year might have different issues. They want you to bring the car in with the gas tank full without over filling it to help them diagnose the issue before the replace the parts. I didn't have the patience to wait it seemed like a minute between trickle fillups after it was full or bouncing the car if that even ever helped. Really hope this fixes it but won't know probably for a month or more from not driving it much during covid.

My wife thinks I'm nuts to think about this, especially since my slow fill method gets me about where I'd like to be and it should be, and she reminds me that this means I only need to fill up once/month instead of perhaps every 3 weeks!!! She's right, but my excuse is I'm retired, have too much free time on my hands during Covid, it only takes an extra 5 minutes to fill up slowly and that is about once/month, and one would think having a gas tank gauge register full is not rocket science and they have been doing it for about 100+ years. I own my RAV4 outright and think about resale value, but that's years away! I hope they did fix your car with the solution you mentioned. I was told that the gas tank fits into an unchangeably sized cavity for all RAV4s, but the tank is tilted for the Hybrids to accommodate the battery so the fill pipe is below the tank top, and replacing the tank as they propose will not work unless they make the tank smaller so the fill pipe and sensor are closer to the top. Just having fun with this - lots more issues in life that somehow seem more pressing. Thanks for your responses!!!! Happy New Year!

Ya I was pretty upset for a long time, even representing Missouri in the class action law suit... and then my wife ended up with breast cancer during this covid mess an we used the heck out of her car the Rav4 Hybrid to save gas on her trips an hour+ each way for her treatments. So putting it into perspective for sure it's just a car.

Since purchased new in Oct 2019, we had same problem with our 2019 Rav4 XLE Hybrid. Now with over 10K miles, by appointment on Dec 16 2019 dealer installed new tank and fuel sending unit per Toyota warranty enhancement program and returned to us with filled tank. Attached picture is result of first fill up after replacement. Over 10 gallon at pump click off, after driving 46 miles, gauge showed above "F", Distance to Empty "492miles, for total estimate range 538 miles. Fix seems to have solved problem.. 39.4 average is since Oct 2019 as MPG has never been reset, shorter trips since pandemic has reduced mileage from 40.4.

@ Jpigott I went to the dealer after Toyota sent the letter about the issue and they said they fixed it by replacing the tank and sensor and the service advisor said it should take a few tanks to register the 535+ miles per tank like I had the first day I drove the vehicle off of the lot. Been through two tanks and fill up to 14 gallons and I leave a half gallon so it’s not topping off and I am only getting about 440 miles till empty and I just don’t get it. I’ll check in after I fill up this weekend and report any changes. If this continues will it be considered a lemon? I would have purchased another brand SUV if I wanted 32 mpg average.

@Guru9971GV I agree 100% I was looking at a bunch of other cars and went with the hybrid to get 40+ mpg. I got turned down on the lemon buy back from Toyota the first time but if that happens again like you are experiencing ill have to consider trying again.

Just had my next first fill up since this "fix" was completed. I only had 20 miles left on the tank and it still only let me fill up to 10.4 gallons and trip estimator is 468 miles. Is anyone getting more around 500+ miles like their first tank of gas showed? I have reset the mpg usage prior to getting gas. This is on a 2020 rav 4 Xle. The fuel gauge has always shown above full.

First fill up after fix on my year old 2019 Rav4 Hybrid was over 10 gallon till auto stop. Estimate Range was over 500miles, when photo was taken car had been driven 103.4 miles since fill up and remaining range estimate 454 for a total "best guess" of 557 miles. Yes, I should not have taken photo at speed but in our case year old problem appears corrected.

Followup to my previous photo post of Best guess 557 miles on 2019 Rav4 hybrid fuel tank gas fill up after Toyota dealer fix. This photo shows remaining range of 316 miles after driving 217.5 miles, a total best guess range of 534 miles on fill up.

Ron, you are also getting better gas mileage than me. Curious if anyone with a 2020 is getting these results. My dealer is clueless what to do next and said I need to keep track of mileage and gas used manually to see if the computer is correct to move forward.

Toyota fix follow up with 101.7 miles of Calif Freeway 75mph “Keep up with traffic speed” impact on range to empty. Driven now 319.2, distance to empty 194 miles, total range 513.2 miles and highway dropped previous dynamic range estimate by 20miles. But, consider this; when the advertised 2019 RAV4 Hybrid mpg 41 city 38 highway are applied to my recent 319.2 trip. 217.5miles/41city = 5.3gal 101.7miles/38 = 2.7gal for a total of 8 gal consumed when multiplied by my RAV4’s actual 39.4 digital MPG results in 315.2 miles and very close to odometers actual 319.2 miles. Filling the tank has been the only issue with our Rav4 since purchased in Oct 2019 and it seems the fix may have solved the problem, range was never an issue. Although, I've discovered that the distance to empty will vary due to amount of driving type PRIOR TO FILL UP and not the digital recorded average MPG. Range perhaps being software calculated dynamically on most recent fuel consumption over a set period of time rather than overall average since MPG was reset?

2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE here again. Toyota went ahead with the Warranty "Fix" again and I'm still not able to fill the tank above 10 Gallons even after driving it to almost ABSOLUTE EMPTY. Have to do the slow fill up trick for an extra 3-4 gallons. This is NOT a fix. Not sure what to do as we are in Canada so can't join any Class Action Law Suits. Thoughts?

380

I only use the VERY slow-fill method and get to full+ all the time (about a gallon/minute but worth it). The DTE is calculated on recent MPG readings (I average 38.9 MPG now), I have gotten 573 and 570 DTEs the last two fill-ups. I would NOT let Toyota touch my car now that this method works, and I hear too many stories that their fix doesn't often work.

Since tank and gauge replacement the problem no longer exists with our 2019 Rav4 Hybrid. While watching an episode of "How its Made" on auto fuel tank production, I thought it was mentioned that Federal Regulations require tanks be manufactured allowing to fill to a set percentage of design capacity, is that correct?
