comperssor quit working if it locks up cani still drive car

If the clutch on the compressor is locked up, no. It will burn up belt. If the compressor is locked up but clutch/pulley still spins, yes you can drive it but you won't be able to use defroster, when you turn on defroster the A/C kicks on to de-humidify
I've found that my compressor is gone out on my 2002 Altima, would this harm my car in the long run? And since it is getting to be winter time do I necessarily need it to run my heat? Ughhh help!!
