I just purchased a 1997 ranger v6. Does the v6 have rear wheel drive or are they 4wd only if they are v6's.

it should be rear wheel drive. I have several friends that have the 97 and they are all two wheel drive rear wheel trucks

V6 rangers were available with both 2wd and 4wd. Look at your front axle, you can tell what it is depending on whether or not you see a differential. If you still aren't sure, post pics

Wow, ok it will say right inside if you have the option to switch it to 4x4, if there is no 2wd/4wd switch it is not a 4x4, pretty simple. Otherwise yes trucks are rear wheel drive. The engine size has nothing to do with it by the way, you can get 2 or 4 in all 3 engine sizes, why anyone would bother with a 4 cylinder 4x4 i have no idea, but to each their own.
