Is 220 V (fast)charge or 110 V (slow)charge better?

Asked by Klnschmdt Sep 30, 2021 at 09:47 PM about the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime Limited FWD

Question type: General

I have been using the 110V charger that came with the car.  Now I have
installed a 220 V charger so I can recharge between trips when I will be
going out again in less than 5 hours.
But at night, I have a choice. I could slow charge or fast charge.  Is there any
reason to choose one over the other. For example perhaps slow charging
increases the battery life or perhaps fast charging is more energy efficient.

First of all, did you know that your car has the capability of charging itself if you run out of electricity and have to drive on gas? It took me about two years to find that feature because my dealer never told me about it. At home, I have been using the 220 V on a 40 amp fuse for over three years with no problems and no significant increase in my hydro bill. My dealer said it was ok to do so but who knows, Toyota is just using us ginny pigs.

A little late here, but it's true of all rechargeable batteries that slower recharge generates less heat, which is what damages the battery and shortens its lifespan in the long run.
