Check your CV shaft boot. The boots sometimes split open and sling all the grease out of them. If it has split, you should see grease on the underside of your car. Unless of course you live in the snow belt. You won't be able to see much of anything without a lift. If the boot is split, you will have to replace the shaft. Hopefully your mechanic actually inspected under the car and not just do a drive by and then park it since it wasn't making any noise.

I know this is a year out of date, but I'm having the EXACT same issue. I took it to toyota and they said it was the steering shaft. Did you get this fixed/figured out? Only 25k here, but same make/model.

Be careful. When they say, it's the steering shaft, there's a ton of parts there. Is the upper shaft or the lower? You may be wise to find out and order one for yourself online. They run about $169- $200. Then I would take it to a local shop and have them install it. You will save tons of money. If your order it through Toyota and have the dealer install it, you will be seeing a huge bill.

Thanks, Reelin68. It was the intermediate shaft. Apparently a defective U-joint. We were 6 months out of warranty. Had we driven it more, we might have caught it sooner, but my wife is a low mileage driver. So yeah, it cost us about $600 to fix. Could have been worse...could have probably been better. The issue is resolved though. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.
