i have a 97 nissan maxima and after driving the battery was hot and steaming

Get the alternator and voltage regulator checked, may be overcharging the battery. This is not something to put off either, as this can cause serious damage to battery or wire harness. Most auto parts stores can de a freebie charging system check, or get it in to any mechanic's shop.
