yes, id say its worth it. id save a little and buy a couple things at once, that way you actually see and feel a difference. for example, if you ge an cold air intake, u may get 5-15hp. if it s only 5, you probably wont feel it, which may make you a lil disappointed. but anyway, i'd do a cold air intake, full exhaust including a high flow cat, fresh tune up... these are the things that you usually get the biggest gains on, unless you go with a turbo, but thats an involved process and usually isnt' cheap, buuut you can see 100hp with that.

Depends on how far you want to go with the modifications. Best power to cost ratio is to go for turbochargers. The simplest basic turbo mod gets you about 35% gains. But due to the power curve of turbo engines your car will be a little quicker than another with equivalent peak hp/torque in NA. However, just dropping in a turbo is risky business and usually you'd have to swap plenty of other parts along with adding the set of turbo modifications. It IS expensive, but you can get a lot more power out of a turbo modified engine as you progress, which makes it more of a bang for your buck, so to speak. If you're on a tighter budget, light NA modifications are fine, but it will take quite a few changes before you feel any difference to your drive. But if you want plenty of power, it can be more expensive than a turbo setup. Cold air intake, high flow filter and cat, intake piping, extractor and exhaust system, cams and stroker kit, injectors, spark plugs and spark booster, throttle body all make a difference. With some serious work you can expect about [( Engine displacement in litres) x 100 x 1.5 ] peak horsepower. Also you must calculate the cost of handling modifications into your budget. Swapped struts and some bars at least.

"Cold air" intakes can be deceiving. some are known as short ram intakes and all they do is add a high flow air filter on the end of a short (usually 3" diameter) intake tube to give off the sound of a true cold air system. Real cold air intakes are a pain in the ass, but the short ram style does increase air flow aswell, but the engine is essentially breathing hot "under hood" air. Costs are drastically different as well. Then you need to exhaust all that extra air you're breathing now. So exhaust mods are a must, for serious exhaust you want to start at the exhaust header/manifold and go all the way back to the mufflers. (if you want to feel a slight gain in performance). But then, you've got all this air entering and exiting your engine but the factory ECU fuel monitor can't keep up with it. A fuel pressure regulator is recomended aslo. You could also try a programmer like SuperChips etc...

notice how the people that have replied don't have a maxima as their listed car. you've got a 96, are you the original owner? if not do the basic maintenance items first: - new sparkplugs (NGK, do NOT put Bosch plugs in) - change fuel filter - clean your throttle body and IACV - while you're at it, run by an AutoZone or similar store and have them scan your car for any CEL codes. your Check Engine light may not be on but you can have codes stored that won't trigger the light by themselves. if the car hasn't been filled with premium gas your knock sensor is probably toast. that won't make the light come on, but your ECU will put your timing in safe mode so you won't get best performance. intake won't get you anything other than noise. maybe 5hp if you're lucky but i doubt it. you want a relatively cheap mod that will get you the most bang for your buck? get a y-pipe. it's what runs between your manifold and your cat. should get you an easy 15-20 hp. high flow cat and exhaust won't get any great gains, you can always just upgrade that when the OEM exhaust is rusted and ready to be replaced. does your front end creak a little when taking turns at speed? hop on ebay and look for a Front Strut Tower Brace (FTSB). should find one for about $30 and it will tighten things up a bit in front. also make it easier when you get under your hood, gives you something to lean on a little bit.

go to nopi.com. look up your car. i did and found an Injen cold air intake that adds 18hp. an exhaust shop can do up an exhaust for you for a fair price. just because people dont CURRENTLY own maximas(or listed every car that they've owned) doesn't mean they havent in the past, nor does that mean they dont know alot about cars and performance in general. horsepower is horsepower, and improving airflow in and out of an engine gets adressed in every performance application. it may be harder to find parts for your vehicle, being that it isnt a performance vehicle in todays standards, but a performance shop can fab up some stuff that will help you move in the right direction.

stillen makes a nice exhaust for your car, and go to cardomain.com and look what other people with your car have done. the first person under 96 maxima did alot of nice mods and is happy with them.

Shiloh is sending you to nopi.com for an Injen intake when they also list Bosch sparkplugs (known to give shoddy performance) and have no mention whatsoever of a y-pipe. if you want the best, go to cattman.com and get his intake ($215) and full exhaust ($1125 for y-pipe, high flow cat, and catback exhaust) setup. you can get the same intake off ebay for about half the price. you can also check warpspeed performance for a y-pipe as well. if you'd rather do your own research, go to forums.maxima.org and read up on your car. different cars and engines respond to different parts, even though some basic premises remain the same.

yes yes lets discount Nopi as a reputable source because they list Bosch spark plugs, because Nopi isn't known worldwide for selling and hosting some of the biggest aftermarket car parts events in the country, as is someone who speaks out against a high flow cat then later suggests to go ahead and get one.

I got my intake for a great deal! easy to install. but it's not cold air. cold air intake on a camry was a pain in the ass.

I have a 99 max with CAI, FSTB, RSB, RSTB, Subframe Connectors, Koni yellows, Eibach Prokit, Warpspeed Y-Pipe/B-Pipe, 00VI, Kosei K1, Unothadox UDP, Exedy Stage 1, and some others. The few of the mods can be hard but all the support you will ever need is right there at maxima.org. Best Bang for the $$ is the Y-Pipe ($200 ~12-20hp), and the 00VI ($250-400 20-40hp) the first is an easy mod the second is more complicated. An Intake will net ~1-4hp and there is an ongoing discussion about keeping the Humoltz-style accordion resonator... If you need mroe info let me know.

I remember spending about an hour installing my first Cold Air Intake on my 95 Maxima. That was a long time ago though. If you take your time it is a very doable project for average Joes. Can offer yet ANOTHER best bang for the buck option? Nitrous. 400-500 bucks and you add 30-75 hp. More than y-pipe, intake, ECU, Hi-flo/no cat, and, yes even turbo or Supercharger. Turbo kits are going to cost you 4 grand to get installed and running right at a minumum. I have supercharged my maxima, I have shot a lot of nitrous into the motor too. Even at the same time. It was unbelieveable. The motor won't last long doing it but it's a lot of fun! :) My first nitrous kit was a ZEX kit that I installed myself and set it up for 50hp. I bought it for $450 and loved it. Easiest nitrous install for sure.

I think a reflash or piggyback is fine for lighter mods. Eventually you'd have to get another ecu. Oh, and change the engine oil when you really get up there.
