Car won't start with universal key inigition switch

I've got a 53 chevy bel air 235 engine 3 speed manual so
this is a project car and my problem is the car won't start
with the universal key ignition switch the switch has 3
post batt,ing,sol.So got black wire from batt terminal to
the starter hot purple to starter solonid from sol post on
switch and pink wire to coil +from ing post on switch. Had
starter checked and is good brand new battery can start
car by turning key on and jumping at starter but will not
start from switch also once started will not shut off with
the key inigition switch

It sounds like you have the wrong ignition switch. The ones I'm seeing online have more than 3 terminals. Google 53 Bel Air ignition switch and you'll see what I mean. Chances are if you got the switch from your local auto parts store, it's wrong. Jim

I tried looking this up today at work. I work for Napa and we don't have a listing for it. The lock cylinder comes up but not the switch itself. Jim
