Get some 1/4" clear aquarium tubing. Put it on the nipple in place of the vacuum line. Carefully suck on the hose while watching for gas in the tube. If you see or smell no gas, put your tongue over the end and see if it holds vacuum. If it holds vacuum and doesn't leak gas, it's good.
