69 chevelle with a 396

Asked by Lewis Jul 26, 2020 at 08:07 PM about the 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Sport Coupe RWD

Question type: General

What is the recommended fuel? The guy I bought it off of ran it on premium
unleaded. Engine has been rebuilt but based on what I am reading it was
originally leaded. Obviously hard to come by, but should just premium unleaded
work? Should i try to find some with no ethanol? Any recommendations or
discussion would be appreciated. Thanks

If u have a Casey's near u they sell regular unleaded with no ethanol. Costs about as much as premium, not as much octane. But be careful, not all premium gas is ethanol free. Cenex premium is ethanol free.

This would depend on the compression ratio but unleaded premium should do it. I would use a ZDDP oil additive and you can use a lead substitute in the gas if you want. Which version of the 396 do you have?

The compression ratio ran from 9 for the 2 barrel engine to 11 for the hottest engine.

Thanks for responses. The Engine has been rebuilt and the specific model I am not sure. It is a 4 bbl carburetor. Any one have any ideas how to tell exactly which L series it is?
