1970 Chevelle COPO? Really?

Asked by GuruF45BH Apr 11, 2020 at 04:37 PM about the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Coupe RWD

Question type: General

I have a neighbor who bought in late 1969 a 1970 Chevelle. It was ordered by
the owner of the dealership a one of kind. He states it was one of eleven cars
made with an all aluminum block, valve covers said 450 HP, 4sp COPO. Does
anyone have any info if this is true, if there were just a few of these I can get
the vin so someone can run it.

The LS6 has 450hp but it was cast iron. The aluminum engines were the ZL1 which was a Vette engine. I think your neighbor is confused. There were some Yenko L72 1969 COPO 427 cars but the engines were not aluminum. The heads may have been.

Get the VIN and maybe you can find some documentation.

Visit GM Media Archives website. They have tons of information about GMs going way back. If you can get the VIN you might be able to get a copy of the original factory to Dealer invoice for the vehicle. That would tell the story! Hope that helps! Jim
