1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition High Pressure in the cooling system

Asked by Tybae40 Sep 13, 2016 at 04:39 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr Eddie Bauer SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition, the one with the 1995 Mustang
302 in it (dont get me started lol).  There seems to be a bit of extra
pressure in the cooling system.  I've bled the cooling system using a bleed
funnel kit and there is no air in the system.  The water pump is good.  The
radiator is brand new as are all of the related hoses.  The thermostat
housing as well as the thermostat, gasket and bolts are brand new.  Yes
the thermostat is in the correct direction.  Liquid is moving through the
system as I can see some particulates in the coolant in the overflow that
weren't there before.  Very minor, but it tells me that liquid is flowing
through the system.  I'm using the standard green coolant 50/50 mix.

The cap is also brand new. I tried 2 different ones. 1 with the safety lever and one without. Same result. There isn't any water in the oil, but I know that isn't the only sign of a blown head gasket. Guess I need to free up my weekend. :(

The absence of water in the oil means nothing when it comes to bad head gaskets. Get your coolant tested for combustion gasses.
