'91 300ZX

Question type: Car Customization
I am looking at buying a 300zx with 5 speed standard transmission. Would like to upgrade the engine to get more horses out of it. What is the chance of getting this car to accept a turbo aftermarket customization or what other customizations would people recommend for more horses?

wao,you are better off getting the Turbo version if you really want the turbos since the conversion will be even more expensive and painfull...These cars gain HP very easily, I would start by the Dual Intake setup, and then get a Highflow Catback system.Make sure to take the Catalitic converter to gain around 15 HP...you will have no problem passing inspection since this car is a 1991..I have a 1990 with around 400HP and pass inspection with no problems
since the turbo cars are usually more expensive and harder to come across, get a non-turbo car and swap the engine for the 3.0 twin turbo version then upgrade what you want. I think its easier doing it this way, and the engine will hold up longer to the turbo since it was built for the turbo pressure.
honestly, as richard said, just buy a turbo version and modify that doing a Twin turbo conversion on a NA 300 is nothing but money and a headache for all the parts needed, biggest issue is what is your budget? and what kind of horsepower are you looking for? these cars arent cheap
It is fine if u get a turbo for it but with an aftermarket turbo u have to be careful because turbo's generate alot of heat in the engine coolant and oil so u need to be careful putting a turbo the bigger they r the more maintenance they will require
cool, thank you all very much for the information. I ended up actually buying the '95 non-turbo and am looking at ways to upgrade it. I need to find a good mechanic in my area to help me switch out the motor to the turbo. Would like to upgrade to a shift stick like those on Lotus cars (no leather cover; just straight metel on a ball silver). Also, looking at replacing the stirring wheel because the leather is all ripped out. Where would one look for engines online? Also, I use a cool place for my four wheeled truck called Jeep @ Morris 4x4. Is there a similar place for my needs for my 300zx?

I highly recomend Z1motorsports.com You may want to google Tiger Engines..they have good prices on hard to find japanese engines
This is the engine you need and at a great price: http://www.jdmsource.ca/products.php?jdm-nissan-vg30dett- twinturbo-fairladyz-300zx&cPath=7
Thanks for all the information. Those sites are very very helpful. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Pittsburgh, PA area that can help with some of the upgrades that I want for this car? T
btw, I got the 95 non-turbo 5-speed. I am now looking at saving up for a good stereo, turbo engine, and other small things like seats, steering wheel refurb, shorter shifter, and maybe new wheels/tires, and a fin! Will take me a while since I am cash poor and this is just a toy for fun right now.
Well since you already bought a non turbo youl need a whole lot of cash to swap a turbo engine or drop in turbos on the stock motor..lots of modification is needed and lotsa time....not to discourage you but iv faced alot of difficulties and at the end gave up but good luck.....
I just recently bought a 91 TT and considering a motor. I read the post about the tiger JDM motors, are they a direct replacement for the american version?
I wouldn't purchase anything from Tiger to be honest. Very bad reviews and plus they are in Canada so if anything goes wrong, you know how big of a nightmare it'll be to exchange/refund. Plus 30 day warranty is not enough time to install/test any large components if you are doing it as a project on the side.
And just an FYI, Z1motorsports and that other place in Atlanta are highly ridiculous with pricing. I would never pay that kind of money for accessories for my car. I found a place in Clifton, NJ that offers JDM engines for much cheaper. Place is called JDM Engine Zone. They sell complete swaps, including harness and ECU...
you should go on ebay and buy the replacement engine and trans with a turbo the trans needs to be changed because the clutch in the five speed you have now cant take the power the turbo puts out the output shaft on the turbo has more splines also
