1996 Ford explorer auto v8

Not shift into drive causing car to run hot.. I can
slow down to 20 mph and temp guage instantly
starts dropping back to normal

Can you explain clearer? If the vehicle will not shift into drive, how is it possibly moving at all to allow you to slow down to 20 MPH.
