When i drive over 40, about third gear, my car fluctuates rapidly between 1 and 2 rpms any time i accelerate. Why is that?

Haven't heard much of that problem. Head over to GAOwnersClub.com to see if anyone there can help. The Grand Am's are build on the same platform and have the same engines as the Alero.

Sounds like the torque converter clutch is engaging and disengaging. It doesn't engage until third gear and up and it disengages when under heavy acceleration. Its just a possibility and not guaranteed.
