I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 2 wheel drive
with a 4.0 liter and I need to find out what it
would be causing the transmission not to go
into drive I was going to town one day
stopped at a stop sign try to take off and it
wouldn't move but it still has reverse could it
be a sensor causing that or a wire

Did you check the transmission fluid level? It may just be low fluid level but the trans could also be shot. If the level is low then there is a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.

Ditto. I agree, he is spot-on. Pull the dipstick and if the fluid is up, put the dipstick right under your nose and determine if it has a burnt odor. You will know what I mean if it does. And is a nice red/pink. If the fluid is brown and/or it has the burnt odor, it's shot. A flush may get a few more miles, but I am constantly preaching the evils of transmission flushes... they generally do more harm than benefit but the cost of a flush will only get you a few more miles anyway. Unlikely just a sensor or wire. Don't shoot us, Full_of_Regrets and I are just messengers, sorry. ~~David
