What should i look for when my car wont start (sometimes)

Asked by mrgilbertgonzales Jul 27, 2015 at 06:20 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When i go on a short trip in my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT with 4-WD,
And get back into my car to continue about my days activities the Engine Turns over
just fine and there is a spark from Coil Pack to Plugs but the engine does not start.
When i leave it and wait anywhere from 30 mins to sometimes several hours it
eventually Starts. This is frustrating me to no end because it does this seemingly at
will with no other symptoms. (Usually when i have something important to do)

When was last time you had a tune up maybe fouled spark plugs not firing all the time but there is some maintenance things you can try like check air filter, clean throttle body replace fuel filter if have not done so in a while add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank and use middle grade or high test gas to help clean out gum and carbon build up.

If you have spark it is likely a fuel problem. When it won't start check or have checked the fuel pressure. It is possible that the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump is the problem.

It does appear the condition is heat related. The coil on the vehicle is pushing twenty years old. Check the resistance, both primary and secondary when the condition occurs.
