How do I check/change ignition leak?

Asked by Gina Aug 07, 2014 at 08:50 PM about the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue 4 Dr GL Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am asking this question for a friend.  She has a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue and the
"service engine" light came on.  She took it to Auto Zone and they placed it on their
diagnostic machine and the tech told her that it was an ignition leak problem.  How do we
trace the problem and fix it?  It seems pretty simple so I don't think there is any need to
take it to a mechanic.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Thank you!

Did they say it was an electrical leak or leaking oil? If it is leaking oil then you will have to replace the ignition coil. Unfortunately, in 2000, Oldsmobile switched to a different type of coil and the price went from $50 for a new coil to $450 for a new coil. If the leak is electrical then you need to find the errant spark. You should be able to do this in a dimly lit space. Just watch under the hood as the car is cranked. Most likely the spark will come from the ignition coil or the cable running out of it. If it is in a wire then you can replace that wire. Reset the service engine light by removing the cables from the battery for a few minutes.
