I have a 2006 F-250 with the 5.4 3 valve, I have a 5.4 2 valve out of a totaled van just laying around. Im not worried about the smog issue. Any info greatly appreciated
I have a 2006 F-250 with the 5.4 3 valve motor. Its been making noise for quite some time now. One of my employees was driving it like this for probably a month or so before saying anything to me. Well last Sunday it finally got so loud that he brought it to my attention. So knowing that it was a timing/phaser issue I pulled off the timing cover and the timing chain guide on bank 1 was completely gone!!! The 2 bolts and inserts were the only pieces of it still attached to the motor. I pulled the drain plug to drain the oil and take a look at how much debris was in there and not a drop came out. So needless to say this motor is completely F*cked... I've been doing a lot of research about these 5.4 3 valve motors and I don't see anything good about them. I run a roofing and siding company and we have over 20 company vehicles. Most of them are early 2000's E-250 and 350 vans with the 2 valve 5.4. I'm not saying that motor is flawless but its much easier to work on and I know it like the back of my hand. I would hate to have to junk the F-250 but i'm not about to spend around 3k for a reman 3 valve that I just know is going to have problems down the road. This is a work truck that the guys take home. They don't give a damn about the trucks cause there not theirs. I have a 2000 something 5.4 2 valve that I took out of one of the vans that got in a accident and got totaled. I took some of the more expensive stuff out of it before I scrapped it.. (motor, trans, ecu). I'm curious if anyone has ever swapped a 2 valve 5.4 in place of the original 3 valve that was in it. I'm very handy and i'm going to give it a shot but I would just like to know if anyone has done this before and what tricks or tips they picked up along the way. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time..
