Can you read the battery voltage at the alternator? The alternator output goes to the starter motor and there is a fusible link at the starter motor end.

This is the alternator for a 1996 Ranger. I had a post but I took it off, I may have been premature, about whether it can be swapped without buying an alternator

Both RockAuto and Oreilleys list the regulators as separate parts, external, there are two of them ...they look identical one is Part #R401 Uses PT754 Connector $65.99 and the other is part# R401 P BWP Series $52.99....I would put up a picture but it's watermarked and would be removed
