Starter/alternator brace. metal bar mounted to the side of the starter and below the alternator.

Asked by Brendan Jan 10, 2018 at 08:45 PM about the 1986 Ford Ranger S Standard Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

there's a support bar coming from under the alternator leading to the starter.
The metal was rusted and cracked,so it came loose. and the vibration
completely loosened up my hardware. I now need to remove the support bar so
i can weld a new .tab on to it. what's the easiest way to get to the bolt fastening
this bar under my alternator

you need to go to a salvage yard and get the part , see what the dealer wants it might not be that bad (don't fear the dealer) if that frame is good it's indestructible

I'm not worried about replacing the part. I just can't figure out how to remove the broken one that is still in the truck. it's bolted under the alternator. and i just want to know if there's a certain access point? i can't seem to fit any of my tools in the cramped space

that's a common problem , there's always a way extensions , universal drive sockets , sometimes you can't see what you're turning , not so much on older ones , but you might have to take some things apart , ford tough

I've taken a pretty good look at it from every angle I can. and yeah I think I'm just going to have to rip a bunch of shit out unfortunately.
