Pontiac G6 no crank - no power to starter

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A friend drove the car and couldn't get the keys out of the ignition. When I
got to it there was a penny stuck in the gear shift track not letting it go into
park. I removed the penny, put in park and the keys came out. 2 days later
tried to crank and nothing. Not turning over, seems no power to starter at all.
I checked all the fuses and relays in all 3 fuse boxes. Hooked up  jumper
cables even though I was sure it wasn't the battery. Thought maybe they
damaged the ignition somehow by jerking the keys out. I tried
reprogramming keys with the 10 min on method. I changed out the ignition
switch and no change. I changed out the actual ignition tumbler, no change. I
tore apart the console to see if they damaged anything and nothing. I
checked the shifter cable and it seems ok. Thought they may have broken or
damaged that too. I checked fuses and relays again. I ran a hot wire to
starter solenoid and it spins but won't crank. It seemed like something is
preventing the car from starting. I unhooked battery overnight to see if it is a
security thing. But there is no security light on. I am kinda baffled now. Help
or advice appreciated

Now that the ignition lock and key has been changed the security system won't recognize the new key until it's programmed to the vehicle. Since you don't have a working key you can't program keys to the vehicle yourself. The magical relearn procedures that everyone talks about will not work in your situation if it is a security system failure, which I don't think it is! Let's back up and put the old ignition switch and lock cylinder back in. At least we know the vehicle will recognize those parts! I'd suspect the neutral safety switch is bad or damaged. If it's like my 2000 Grand Prix the neutral safety switch is on the shifter assembly. My guess is it's been damaged by your friend trying to force the shifter into park with the penny in the shifter slot. Once you get the old ignition parts back in try to start the engine in each position of the shifter. Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal in case the engine does crank in gear. You don't want the vehicle to lunge forward or backwards. Hope that helps! Jim
