Is there a switch somewhere around the hatch that enables a courtesy lamp when the hatch is opened? If there is I would start looking in that area to see if it powers up a light in the opening.

We took it to two car repair places. In the end, it was caused by an electrical short. Apparently Mazda's are prone to electrical issues. Unfortunately, it started having problems again and we had to replace the whole computer system. Very expensive!
