2003 Pontiac Sunfire oil leak
Okay so I did an oil change on a 2003 Pontiac
Sunfire 2.2 L. I drain the oil remove the old oil filter
and replace the seal around the oil filter cap. I've
been replace the oil with 5W30 synthetic oil 5 liters
is called for. I replace the old oil filter with a new
one and secure the oil filter cap. A few days ago I
was driving and I smell burning oil so I popped the
hood to notice a massive oil leak under the hood
around the oil filter cap. The oil filter cap seal was
replaced and the oil was filled back up to
maximum capacity and we kept was secured once
again. Well it's been about a week and today I
smell oil so I popped the hood again only to notice
another massive oil leak around the same spot.
Can anybody help me!?!?!?!?!
Make sure the oil filter seal from the previous filter change is still not on there, and new oil filters come with their own new oil seal, you are to leave it in place on the new oil filter and check the old oil filter that its seal did remove with the old filter you also are to apply some oil to the new oil filter seal before screwing on the new oil filter.
I checked the filter cap as well as the filter cartridge itself and both still seem to be in the correct position. Am I installing it wrong? When I originally change the oil cartridge I attach the cartridge to the filter cap and then inserted into the oil filter housing and tightened it down. Am I supposed to put the cartridge in the oil filter housing first? Or could the leak be coming from somewhere else?
I think you seat the oil filter first then the cap.

Look around the housing and on all other surfaces beside it and near it to see if you can see any other place the oil can be coming from too. This oil filter set up reminds me of motorcycle oil filter changes, make sure the cap goes on without cross threading and do not over tighten it and if the o'ring seal looks bad replace it and put oil on it too.
The threads look fine on the oil filter and the housing and the cap. Inspected the cap for cracks and inspected both seals to make sure there was no tears or pinches and both look fine. Filled it back up and took it for a drive and I seem to have the same leak.
I think you are going to have to take it to have it looked at.
I had a severe oil leak on my 2004 Pontiac Sunfire.after checking everything thoroughly as I thought, but it was a simple hairline fracture or crack in the oil filter cap. After cleaning up the mess as best I could there was still a residue of oil on the engine that will burn off in a couple of days or go to a carwash with and under carraige wash.it worked great.
