I have a 2003 manual transmission Vibe.

Asked by cluelesscarowner Jun 27, 2008 at 02:37 PM about the 2003 Pontiac Vibe Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Currently it is making a humming noise when I pull forward from a stop. I had it checked by a local mechanic, who found the noise "unusual."
He felt it might be the clutch starting to go, so he contacted someone at Toyota, who said that the 2003 Vibe, manual transmission, has been
known to have transmission issues due to a GM defect.  Any truth to this?

no necessarily, get all the drivetrain parts checked. like the axles and just check any moving part from the transmission to the wheels.. i had a squeaking sound in my suzuki swift and after a lot of pain and misery it was an intermidiate shaft that was causing the problem.

check fluid level on firewall for the hydrolic clutch,if low fill with dot break fluid.then your clutch may need replacing and release bearing.

go to a new mechanic if he cant diagnose that you will be able to find someone who can. You know that a Toyota dealership wasnt the right place to go with your GM. GM certified mechanics are trained in GM and are the best ones to work with its a little bit more expensive but its your best bet. O yeah its your clutch Vibes 5 speed is notorious for it.

the only thing GM about the vibe is the emblem on the front, other than that it's just a toyota matrix. but that noise is probably coming from the clutch because they are crap. i had to replace mine at 75,000 miles because it was garbage.

Did you ever find out what the noise was? I have a 2003 Vibe GT 6 speed manual transmission. I'm getting a squeak noise when the car is warm and when I lurch forward in gear. It's very annoying. I have 71,000 miles on the original clutch. Any idea what the problem is?

Here a video of someone on the Generation Vibe website that has the same problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U81vhrip0xE Anyone have any ideas?

Transmission bearings are not very good in the 2003 5-speed. Put some AMSOIL 75W-90 in it and it might last longer.

my 2003 has 115k miles and the trans granaded less than a week after i bought it so i read you can put a 6spd from the gt version but all you need to do is put longer cv shafts in it
