You must have a po442 code, Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected Small Leak 2 things that are in the system that you may try first, the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid, about $25, and this can be tested to see if it is working, and the Vapor Canister Purge Valve, about $40, but rarely goes bad. The VCVS is what usually goes bad & like I said, can be tested first. Otherwise a bad gas cap and filler neck could be the problem. The smoke test would check hoses and connections which is usually a last resort.

You can run a smoke test at home. Pull the brake booster line and attach another hose to it and blow cigar smoke or cigarette smoke though it. Then follow the smoke. I did this on my 2000 Pontiac firebird hatchback.

Do you have the engine running when you do this or not. Sounds pretty cool, and sounds like it may work.
