'99 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.4L - Engine Shake and Gas Smell

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 sunfire 2.4l that was recently making an electrical arcing sound
while idling and would idle a little rough. I was told that it's possible an issue
with the coil tower or the boots. I took the coil "cassette" off the boots and
inspected for any oil around the plugs and it was clean. Some of the plastic
sleeves for the boots were cracked at the bottom when I pulled them out for
inspection.

I re-seated all the boots with the sleeves locked in place (they were just
sorta sitting there in the sleeves before). I then placed the coil tower
cassette thing back onto the boots and tightened it down in a criss cross
pattern. When I started the car, it fired up, but, during idle, the engine
started shaking and I could smell fuel, which I didn't before removing the
coil tower thing.

Does anyone know what might be the issue?

sounds like you may have a leaking injector, have them checked...

Thanks for the tip, Joemom. I went ahead and replaced the spark plug boots and sleeves, added some dielectric grease to the coil tower points and plug points and reseated the whole thing. Car fired up and purred like a kitten. No more gas smell, either.
