Key stuck in on position, 1999 Pontiac Sunfire

Asked by eric May 26, 2018 at 12:47 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought a 1999 Pontiac
sunfire,  4 door for $375. Owner
told me trouble with ignition have
to pull key out a bit to get it to turn
over.   Now key wont turn back to
off position,  have to disconnect
negative lead to battery so as not
to drain battery.  Took it to a lock
Smith he says it's not the ignition
but something to do with two
wires running from ignition down
steering column,  basically he
says I need new steering column.
Is he right doesn't make sense to
me?

I saw no shortage of youtube vids on replacing a 99 Sunfire ignition lock cylinder, I would try that myself before paying a locksmith to get involved. You'll end up paying a locksmith more than what you paid for the car. You can also look at parts from a pull-a-part or salvage yard to keep costs down.

Before you buy a new cylinder lock, try removing Park Lock Cable from the steering column. If that fixes your problem then the Park Lock Cable needs to be adjusted or replaced.

im having kinda the same issue with the same exact car but a 98 same color did you figure out what the problem was
