98 sunfire overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 sunfire that started overheating when I
bought it. Figured out pretty easily that it was the
radiator fan not turning on. But, 6 months later here
we are and the radiator fan IS working. So I noticed
something weird about it though. First it random,
some days this car runs like a dream and stays in
the middle all day. Other days, when in park and
idling it looks like the picture. Second  it started
acting up today. So I got it home and sat in park
watching the heat slowly rise. Then when it was
just at this point in the picture I shifted the car into
drive, and  the heat dropped by about 10 to15
degrees.

By only putting the car in drive (D not moving)the temp decreased, I think you might need a fan timer module but please get a second opinion.

All suggestions are appreciated. I will keep everyone updated with a solution or things that I've tried. I do not know when I will be able to work on it though (money, time, etc.)

You may want to check your thermostat. It might be failing to open or, if it has been replaced, it may be opening at a higher than recommended temp.
