Asked by Uwin May 22, 2012 at 03:41 PM about the 2005 Porsche Cayenne S AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

All at once there have been several warnings messages.  4ABS FAILURE, PSM FAILURE, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
WORKSHOP. SERVICE DUE IN 1500 miles.  2005.  Cayenne.  110k miles original owner all recommended
services.

Due the fact the warnings appear to be  shown inconsistently I wonder if this a CPU issue vs the underlying various
systems shown.  Car sems to drive normally.  Any ideas?

That sounds like an abs sensor went bad, you should be okay till you can go and bring it in for service.

i think your wheel speed sensor is broken , one of em because this happens when one of the sensor is not giving the signal to the ABS ECU which messes alot of system such as traction control system and VSC vehicle stability control unit

This happened to my 996tt once and it turned out the wheel speed sensor "harness" was at fault. Once the repair kit was hardwired into place, everything worked perfectly. An OBD code reader should show code(s) to identify which corner of the car to test for sensor output before deciding which part needs to be replaced.

My mechanic called and tested the above Cayenne and believes the cause is a low battery. The communication systems are not syncing. Great if this only a battery. After testing he will re run diagnostics.

As a wrap up and having driven my Cayenne for a couple months to test a complete fix. The authorized Porsche dealer first replaced the battery, then a $900 part which did not fix the problem. They couldn't reprogram this computer and reinstalled the original part. The next step was a tedious time consuming circuit testing of the entire harness. The root cause was found in a faulty factory solder job causing and an intermittent drop in voltage to a part located under the driver's seat. The dealer replaced this $41 part finally. My car was in the shop for over 3 weeks without any courtesy car being offered. The total cost was nearly $1,700. This car has consumed nearly 100% of the original list price in warranty and owner expense. Within the first 1000 miles a Long Block engine was needed so I should have cut my loses at this point. It went downhill and basically over 100,000 mile many parts had to be replaced. I did have to buy the extended 100,000 warranty at 49,000 miles which covered a new transmission amount many other parts costing nearly $20,000. The brakes and tires do not experience normal life and the mileage is rotten. If anyone buys a used Porsche Cayenne they should do so with their eyes wide open. Reminds me of the worst years of the YUGO. The residual value clearly represents how the rest of owners are willing to pass these Cayennes off on the ill informed. I have had many other Porsches, Mercedes, Audis and Lexus cars and have had other high milage excellent experiences without anything like this excuse for a 2005 Porsche Cayenne. The only winner has been the dealer's service department. Not happy......
