inside is clean and nice and drives great - what should I be checking out? This

All the issues are well documented on the 01 Boxsters visit the Porsche forums.. Good to have $2000 set aside for service.
Find out if the IMS bearing has been replaced. Ask for service records and have a Porsche specialist check it out before buying. If the car is Tiptronic the IMS bearing replacement is really expensive.
I am in the exact same boat as OP -- for $9-10k just looking for a fun summer occasional drive. Is it really worth spending $4000 on an IMS retrofit? If the car fails... well I'm out $10k. But if the failure rate is <30%, it doesn't make sense... better to roll the dice. Is it dangerous to take a chance, i.e., could the IMS fail on the interstate at 70 MPH? Thanks.
