IMS BEARING

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I would like to know if you can give me the model years and/or the vin# range for the 2001 Boxster S with the questionable IMS bearings, and what is the likelihood of having to replace it. I have a 2001 Boxster S with approx. 71k on it. Thanking you in advance for any info that you can supply.

All Boxsters through 2008 has IMS bearings that can fail. There were several bearing styles with the first one probably being the best. Yours may or may not be the dual row IMS. I do not think there is any way to know which one you have without tearing into the engine. Even the dual row IMS can fail so you really should upgrade the bearing. If it fails you are looking at a new engine.

I have a 2001 Boxter S and just learned about the IMS - F_O_R is that your 2001 picture with the 134,255 miles on it? Did you get the IMS replaced or is that before?
The answer on getting it done is dependent on many factors: How old is the car? What is the resale value? How many miles? How attached to it are you? As far as likelihood, it's hard to know and likely dependent on the bearing you have. More info here: https://www.oregonpca.org/ims-saga/
