Should I buy a Boxter

Asked by SteveBoydstun Nov 23, 2017 at 02:47 PM about the 2000 Porsche Boxster Base

Question type: General

I have a friend who owns a 2000 Boxter with ~70K. It is a beautiful blue and in
mint condition. She is asking 6200.00. I have never owned a high-performance
car and I am worried that this is a lot of car for a Sunday driver. Any thoughts?

That's on the low side for Boxster values, so might be a bargain, but we don't know anything about it to suggest otherwise. Upkeep can be expensive.

Price sounds fair for private sale. I had one the same year, maintenance can be very inexpensive if you find a mechanic that will let you buy the replacement parts. When my starter went out the first mechanic I went to wanted $1200 to replace it so needless to say that’s not where I got it fixed.I found the starter on line for $250 and I also found a mechanic that would replace it for $250. It’s a Porsche so you pay more for saying you drive a Porsche especially because average starter cost about half the price and even less on labor to have it done. But the engine in those cars is tucked into the car so it it’s s not like most vehicles that you can work on them on your own. And just wait until you have to do an oil change, those are expensive, they take 10 quarts of synthetic oil, so it’s about a $160 oil change

Watch out for the IMS bearing issue. There is a fix which is not cheap or you can just install a new bearing every 40k or so.
