Can the steering rack be adequately examined on a lift or must it be removed?

Asked by LA928 Jul 26, 2016 at 12:41 PM about the 1994 Porsche 928 GTS Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This question is a request for confirmation of an earlier response I found very
helpful. The reason is one repair estimate that is primarily for replacing the tie
rods on our '94 928 includes removing the steering rack at a tremendous cost,
while the other estimate says it isn't necessary to remove the steering rack to
determine if it is damaged. We don't know what to believe.

Anyone that is knowledgeable with the 928 would NOT remove the rack and pinion for inspection rather silly, you would remove it for replacement with a remanufactured unit... If this wasn't the implication or intent of the service center I would consider them unworthy or not competent to manage a Porsche 928 vehicle. Unfortunately some "shops" don't understand or might regard Porsche vehicles as difficult? or just expect the average owner to accept outrageous fees, for simple tasks.
