If you dropped the distributor in the block correctly while
the #1 piston was at tdc on compression + the 0°
balancer mark was aligned with the timing pointer + the
rotor was pointing at the #1 cylinder distributor cap post,
all youve gotta do is draw a line over the 10° btdc mark
on the balancer (using Witeout) connect a timing
light, start the engine and let it warm up for a few
minutes, locate the Spout plug on the passenger side
near the maf sensor, remove the plug, aim the timing light
at the balancer and see what degree mark is aligned with
the timing pointer. If its not the 10° btdc mark, barely
loosen the distributor holddown bolt and rotate the
distributor til your white line/10° mark is aligned with the
timing pointer & tighten the bolt.Check timing once more
with the light to verify it didnt move while you were
tightening the bolt and if its still good, reconnect the
Spout plug and you're good to go.
*Tip*
If you want slightly more low end power and you run 91-
93 octane fuel, bump the timing up to the 14° btdc
position instead of the 10° position.
*Tip*
If your block and distributor are the original parts your
car came with from the factory, score marks were cut into
your block & distributor housing by the engine builder at
Ford that assembled your engine. If these marks are still
visible on your engine, aligning the distributor housing
score mark up with the block score mark, after youve
dropped the distributor in the block while the 0° mark is
aligned with the timing pointer & the rotor is pointing at
the #1 post on the distributor cap, will put the timing at
the factory 10° setting. The score marks are shown
below.
