My Lexus ES 300 dashboard fan threw some broken pieces of sponge .. what was that and where was it coming from .. what should I do about it?

the ducting under the dash is connected by sponge-like material- foam- and that foam will degrade because of the heat in the dashboard from the sun- nothing to worry about- the other possibility is mice carrying in random pieces of material to make a nest in your ducting- if you start seeing twigs and leaves blowing out- then start worrying-
